The dryer consists of a large, rotating cylindrical tube, usually supported by a concrete column or steel beam. The dryer slope slightly lowers the discharge end than the material feed end for conveying material through the dryer under gravity. When the dried material enters the dryer and rotates as a dryer, the material is lifted by a series of internal fins lining the inner wall of the dryer. When the material gets high enough to roll back the broken fin, it falls back down to the bottom of the dryer, passing through the hot air flow as it drops. The gas flow may be moving towards the discharge end from the feed end (called cocurrent) or toward the feed end from the discharge end (referred to as countercurrent flow). The airflow can consist of a mixture of air and combustion gases from the burner, in which case the dryer is referred to as direct heating drying. Alternatively, the gas stream may be preheated by air or another (sometimes inert) gas. When the gas flow is from a number of devices in which the combustion gas from the burner does not enter the dryer, it is known to preheat as an indirect heating dryer. Generally, indirect heating dryers are used when product contamination is a problem. In some cases, the combination of heated direct and indirect rotary dryers can also improve overall efficiency. Rotary dryer is suitable for drying metal and non-metallic minerals, clay cement industry and slime coal mine, etc. Rotary dryer can be widely used to dry various materials, and it is a simple operation.
